Make back-to-school easier for everyone

Aug. 4, 2025—As the first day of school creeps closer and school supply lists appear on the fridge, the transition from summer to school can stir up nerves and excitement alike.

Whether your child is stepping into a classroom for the first time or just moving up a grade, these tips can give your family a head start on getting ready. And that can help your child feel confident, prepared and ready to tackle a brand-new year.

Shift sleep schedules slowly

One of the best ways to set your child up for a good school start is to reset their bedtime before school begins. Over the summer, it's easy for sleep schedules to drift later. To get back on track, the Sleep Foundation recommends moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 minutes each day.

Gradually adjusting makes it easier for kids to get the rest they need—and helps mornings go more smoothly once school is back in session.

Make space for worries

It's normal for kids to feel nervous about going back to school, reports the Child Mind Institute. They might wonder who their teacher will be, what friends will be in their class or how hard the work will be this year. Give your children space to talk about whatever is on their mind. Listen closely, validate their feelings and offer strategies for how to deal with whatever may come up.

Rehearse a school day

A quick walk-through can help your child feel more prepared, especially if they're starting at a new school. Visit the building; explore the halls; and take in the sights, the sounds and even the smells. Finding their classroom or locker ahead of time can make the first day feel more familiar and less hectic.

Double-check immunizations

This is a good time to review your child's medical records. Staying up-to-date on immunizations helps protect your child and others from preventable diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
