Having a baby requires a whole lot of, well, stuff. From clothing to furniture, a baby needs a lot of gear for someone so small. Luckily, a baby shower can help you get started collecting necessities without having to foot the entire bill.

You're the boss of your baby shower
Everyone is different, so if you're not thrilled by the prospect of being the center of attention, that's OK. But you may want to consider accepting a friend or relative's offer to throw you a baby shower in order to gather items you may want or need to care for your little one.
And because you're the one having the baby, you have free rein to say yes or no to the event's planned activities. You may want to play every game—or none at all. At the end of the day, this is an event to celebrate you and your baby.
The benefits of a registry
If you do give a thumbs-up to a baby shower, don't be shy about starting a gift registry. This is a great way to get the things you and your baby really need and will save you the hassle of having to exchange 15 newborn onesies for a bigger variety of sizes. You'll likely want to ask for a mixture of clothing and gear.
Baby clothing basics
When registering for baby clothes, keep sizing in mind. Your baby may not stay in newborn or one-month sizes for very long, so be sure to order a range of sizes that will span the first 18 months of your baby's life.
Avoid asking for baby shoes. Little ones don't need to wear shoes until they're ready to walk.
Here's a list of clothing basics you might want to include in your gift registry:
- Pajama sets (with feet).
- Onesies with snaps for easy diaper changes.
- Shirts and sweaters with snaps or a lap neck for safe and simple changing.
- Socks.
- Sleep sacks.
- Swaddling and receiving blankets. (Think about the season—do they need to be warm or lightweight?)
- Baby washcloths and hooded towels.
- Diapers.
Gear to get
Baby gear ranges from small- to big-ticket items. It doesn't hurt to put things like your dream crib or stroller on the list in case baby's future grandparents are feeling generous. Here are other items you may want or need:
- Crib and bedding. Make sure both meet all current safety specifications.
- Changing table. Again, be sure to pay attention to safety specs.
- Diaper pail.
- Plastic baby washtub.
- Cool mist humidifier. This is a good idea if you live in a very dry climate.
- Mobile.
- Stroller.
- Car seat. This is yet another item where you want to be sure your first choice meets all safety standards.
- Baby bottles and/or a breast pump.
- Toys and newborn books.
