Keep it cool—and safe

Ultraviolet (UV) sunrays can do more than raise your skin cancer risk. They can hurt your eyes and boost your risk of cataracts.

Finding shade can help you avoid UV damage outdoors. So too can using sunscreen and sunglasses.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN AND EYES

Check the label when buying sunglasses. They should offer 99% to 100% UV protection or have a UV400 rating.

Consider wraparound sunglasses. Other styles may let in UV rays from the sides.

Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Reapply after 2 hours—sooner if you swim or sweat.

Cover up. Wear pants and long sleeves when practical.

Wear a sun hat. A wide-brimmed hat helps protect the face and eyes.

Planning some outdoor fun?

Sunglasses and sunscreen are two things to check off your list every time. Pretty soon these measures will become a healthy habit.
