What is pediatrics?

Pediatrics is the medical specialty that focuses on the growth and development of children and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in children.

The specialty encompasses physical, emotional and social health from infancy through adolescence.

Pediatricians:

  • Provide education, advice and guidance to parents and children.
  • Conduct well-baby examinations to evaluate general health.
  • Provide vaccinations.
  • Treat short- and long-term illnesses and diseases.

Pediatricians also join in community efforts to prevent and solve problems with children's healthcare, and serve as children's advocates.
