Planning your baby's 1st birthday party

Your child's first birthday is a momentous occasion. You may be thinking of celebrating quietly or perhaps of throwing a full-blown birthday bash. Or maybe your plans fall somewhere in between. Whatever you choose, keep safety in mind.

Preparation pays

A little planning is needed to be sure the party is safe for your tot and other children who will attend. This is especially true when choosing presents and picking out decorations. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts suggest that you:

  • Forgo decorations that are sharp or breakable. It's also best to avoid those that look like food or candy. Youngsters may try to eat them.
  • Do not allow young children to play with balloons, which are a serious choking hazard.
  • Look for toys that are age-appropriate and fit your child's skills and abilities. Be very wary of toys with small parts. They may pose a choking danger for children younger than 3. If your child receives any presents that aren't right for his or her age, consider putting them away until your child is older.
  • Discard any plastic wrappings left from opening presents right away. A child may think these are fun to play with, but they are a real suffocation hazard.

Minimize your own stress

It may be tempting to break the bank for this first birthday celebration. However, you may regret it when it comes time to pay for everything. So set a budget and stick to it. You'll save yourself, and your pocketbook, a lot of stress.

You may also feel pressure to make this birthday party perfect. But you need to be realistic. Few events turn out perfectly. So don't focus on throwing a flawless party. Trying to do that may just make you feel anxious and stressed. Instead, focus on your child. Have fun and enjoy the time you spend together.
