Turn back the clock—and set the stage for more sleep

Nov. 3, 2018—Remember that hour of sleep you lost when we turned the clocks forward in March? You're about to get it back.

Daylight saving time ends tomorrow at 2 a.m. That means tonight it's time to set the clocks back by one hour and make the switch to standard time. (Unless you're in Hawaii or Arizona, where daylight saving time isn't observed.)

Take advantage of the time change

If you struggle to get the recommended 7 to 8 hours of daily shuteye, use this as a chance to make snagging an extra hour of sleep a habit. Here's how to get started:

  • Don't change your clocks until you're ready to go to bed at your normal time.
  • Just before you go to bed, go around your home and set all clocks back by one hour.
  • Wake up at your normal time in the morning, feeling refreshed with the extra hour of sleep.
  • Keep going to bed each night at the earlier time.

One hour of extra sleep won't wipe out your sleep debt. But making that extra hour a new nightly habit will do you good over time.
