Congressman Jerry Moran Tours Rector Diabetes Center
PARSONS, Kan., Jan. 5, 2010 – U.S. Representative Jerry Moran visited Labette Health’s Rector Diabetes Education and Resource Center Tuesday afternoon. Congressman Moran, who has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat that will become vacant in 2010, currently represents Kansas’ First District, which includes 69 counties in central and western Kansas.
During the visit, Congressman Moran reinterated his support for rural health-care providers and talked about the impact that current health care proposals might have. He also listened to presentations on the Rector Center's innovative programs to combat diabetes from Labette Health CEO William Mahoney, Rector Center Medical Director Dr. Manish Dixit, Registered Dietitian Reno Jain, and Rector Center Director Shellie Collins.
As a leader in the congressional Rural Health Care Coalition, he has led the fight to save rural hospitals and has sponsored legislation to bring more physicians to underserved areas. His efforts to restore Medicare funding for small hospitals has earned him the top legislative award from the National Rural Health Association and the Distinguished Health Care Advocate Award from the Kansas Hospital Association.
“Jerry Moran is a true friend of health care,” said Labette Health CEO William Mahoney. “He is a down-to-earth person who has fought hard to ensure that the health-care needs of Kansans are met. He currently represents the western part of the state, so we look forward to this opportunity to show off our facility and our unique initiatives like the Rector Diabetes Education and Resource Center.”
