Sept. 28 Reception to Welcome New Healthcare Providers
PARSONS, Kan., Sept. 10, 2009 -- Labette Health will welcome several new healthcare providers with a reception from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, in the hospital’s main lobby. The public will have an opportunity to meet new physicians and healthcare providers who have recently joined Labette Health – and some who will come to Parsons in the future. New providers who will be featured at the reception include:
Shawn Southwick, D.O.
A native of Garber, Okla., Dr. Southwick received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma University in Norman before receiving his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Oklahoma State University in Tulsa.
He completed his family medicine internship and residency at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. He worked urgent-care clinics and emergency departments in Tennessee. He also worked at St. John’s Med Center in Lamar, Mo., and St. John’s urgent care and emergency department in Joplin. Most recently, he was medical director of Independence Mercy Hospital’s emergency department. Dr. Southwick and his wife, Cheron, have four children.
Kelly Gorman, M.D.
A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Gorman began seeing patients August 20 at the Katy Clinic. She is the daughter of Dan and Doris Sweeney of Parsons, Her husband, Trenton, is the son of Bill and Sandy Gorman, also of Parsons, and both attended Parsons High School.
Dr. Gorman recently completed a year as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., following a three-year pediatric residency with Florida State University. She was named the program’s Intern of the Year in 2005-2006.
Dr. Gorman received her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and Wichita. She graduated with honors from the University of Kansas in Lawrence with a degree in Spanish.
Stanley Handshy, M.D.
Dr. Handshy, who practiced in Erie from 1982 through 1993, will return to the Erie Medical Clinic this fall. A board-certified family practitioner with a specialization in obstetrics, he comes to Parsons from Tahlequah, Okla.
In addition to his practice in Erie, Dr. Handshy also operated the Handshy Medical Clinic in Fredonia and Chanute from 2001 through 2007. He was medical director of Sage Hospital in Ganado, Ariz., from 1999 through 2001, and also practiced in New Braunfels, Texas, from 1993 through 1999.
A graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, he completed his family practice residency at Goppert Family Care Center in Kansas City, Mo. He and his wife, Kaylee, have five children.
Denise Huskey, M.D.
Dr. Huskey, a family practitioner, comes to Parsons and Labette Health from Wichita, where she completed her family medicine residency at Via Christi and received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. A native of Andover, she received a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University.
During her residency, Dr. Huskey conducted research in a clinical assessment program in diabetes management.
She and her husband, Steven, reside in Parsons. Dr. Huskey began seeing patients September 3 in Building D, Suite 4, on the Labette Health campus.
Scott Fox, A.R.N.P.
Fox will operate a new medical clinic in Cherryvale, Labette Health’s third outside of Parsons. The clinic is now being renovated and is expected to open in October.
A native of Cherryvale, Fox was a flight nurse with EagleMed Medical Transport based in Joplin, Mo. He previously worked as an emergency and intensive-care nurse at Freeman Health System in Joplin, where he managed the emergency department nursing staff.
He received a bachelor of science degree in nursing in 2000 and graduated cum laude with a master’s degree as a family nurse practioner in 2009, both from Pittsburg State University. He and his wife, Teri, have two children, Carley, 3, and Landon, 21 months.

Two other physicians who will be joining Labette Health in 2010 also are expected to attend the reception.
Dr. Julie Griffin, a graduate of Kansas University School of Medicine, is now completing a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She will join Labette Health’s innovative hospitalist program in August 2010.
Dr. Eric Thomson is now completing a one-year surgical obstetrics fellowship at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Dr. Thomson will begin his family practice and obstetrics clinic at Labette Health in August 2010.
